Tremolo System

how do you set up a stratocaster to get the tremolo system working?
the bridge on my strat is all the way down so i cant use my tremolo at all, how do i set the bridge up to where the tremolo system works and without getting strings out of tune
Hi! Essentially, you need to establish the correct balance between the Tremolo Block springs and the string tension. Easier said than done! If you have added heavier strings, the tremolo block is probably binding against the body cavity. Conversely, if you went to lighter strings, you would be limiting any upward (sharp) movement of the Tremolo Bar. Start by loosening the strings, so that a 1/16 to 1/8-inch piece of folded paper is held in place between the bottom rear of the Tremolo Bridge plate and the top of the body. If the bridge is already resting against the body, depress the arm to allow for insertion of the paper. Tune one string at a time, generally starting with the low “E”. Tune each string to pitch as you go, and then move on to the next one in order. Watch to see if the Bridge Plate is pulling away from its resting place against the folded paper. If it does, remove the backplate and tighten the spring claw until the bridge plate is again (lightly) resting on the paper. If you tune all the strings to pitch, and the tremolo bridge has not moved, you will need to loosen the spring claw until the folded paper just pulls loose with minimum pressure. The goal is to have your instrument in tune, and the rear of the tremolo bridge at rest with a 1/16 to 1/8-inch gap. This whole process is going to take you awhile (going back and forth between tuning and spring tweaks), so be patient! You may find that the saddles need adjusted, now that you have the proper orientation established for the bridge assembly. Don’t forget to check the intonation and Truss Rod adjustments, especially if you have changed string gauges. Once all the new strings are installed and tuned, put your thumb on the nut and with the other hand, pinch each string around the 12th fret and pull upward about an inch or so a couple of times, until you feel resistance. This will help set the string, and better maintain tuning. Re-tune each string (again!), and you are good to go! If you stick with the same strings and gauges, and change them one string at a time in the future, you should not need to make any additional adjustments. Let me know if I can help further, okay? Best regards, Dana
